Great Leighs is the UK’s first brand new racecourse in 80 years – with a new approach to the racing experience.
Racing all year round – from summer days to floodlit winter nights – our racing will be part of an extensive entertainment package, with bars and restaurants open long after racing has finished. The county’s first sports betting hall will be open on additional days for football, cricket, Formula One and other major events. In the spirit of the old Essex County Showground, outdoor events and concert extravaganzas are also planned.
The up-to-date configuration of the racing circuit will raise the growing profile of all-weather racing, enabling authentic UK trials for the rich contests on all-weather ovals across the globe.
Unique to British racing, on-site racehorse training will give young trainers an important step up the ladder, and open the prospect of racehorse ownership to many people new to the sport.
Great Leighs Racecourse occupies the site of the former Essex County Showground, between Chelmsford and Braintree. It is directly off the A131 bypass, north of Great Leighs village.
Trains run to Chelmsford between London Liverpool Street and Ipswich five times an hour. The non-stop service takes 30 minutes.
